Introduction

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science — marked every year on February 11 — is more than just a celebration. It’s a powerful reminder of the urgent need to break barriers, challenge gender stereotypes, and create a future where women and girls can thrive in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

This year, we observed the 10th anniversary of this important day under the theme: “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.” This theme emphasized the critical role women play in shaping the future of science and highlighted the importance of amplifying their voices and contributions. It was a call to not only recognize the achievements of women in STEM but also to actively create spaces where they can excel, innovate, and lead.

At WENOSA (Women’s Empowerment Network of South Africa), we stand firmly as advocates for movements and initiatives like these. We believe that empowering women in science and other male-dominated fields isn’t just about creating opportunities — it’s about creating lasting change.

Our mission is clear:

  • Support women by ensuring they have access to the resources, mentorship, and funding needed to excel in their careers.
  • Challenge systemic barriers that hold women back from leadership roles in STEM.
  • Increase female representation in scientific fields by encouraging young girls to pursue studies in math, science, and technology.
  • Amplify the voices of women scientists and innovators, celebrating their achievements and advocating for their rightful place at the table.

We recognize that true empowerment means going beyond words. It’s about action — fostering supportive communities, creating mentorship networks, and working hand in hand with partners to build pathways for women to rise, lead, and inspire future generations.

As we observe this day, let’s remember: when women rise in science, the world moves forward. WENOSA remains committed to being part of that progress — advocating, supporting, and building a future where every girl knows that her voice, her ideas, and her dreams belong in STEM.
