Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action to end all forms of violence against women and girls. This important period not only emphasizes the need for immediate intervention but also serves as a call to action for governments, communities, and individuals to take steps to create safer, more inclusive spaces for women everywhere.
The dates were carefully chosen to align with two significant milestones: November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10, Human Rights Day, which marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights in 1948. This year, the theme of the campaign is “Time to Act Now”. The theme calls for urgent and decisive action, highlighting the escalation of violence against women and stressing that every minute counts. It reminds us that gender-based violence is not just a private issue but a widespread social challenge that demands a global, systemic response.
The 16 Days of Activism is also a platform for raising awareness about the alarming statistics and realities faced by women worldwide. Research continues to show that one in three women experience physical or sexual violence, often at the hands of an intimate partner. These statistics are a stark reminder that violence against women holds them back from reaching their full potential, stifling their opportunities and aspirations. It is a barrier to equality, dignity, and empowerment.
WENOSA, as an organization dedicated to empowering and equipping women, is fully aligned with the mission of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Our mandate is to promote equality and equip women for leadership, entrepreneurship, and overall independence.
By focusing on creating opportunities for women to thrive in their personal and professional lives, WENOSA is working toward eliminating the systemic barriers that perpetuate violence and discrimination. This includes providing access to resources, mentorship, and platforms that elevate women’s voices and leadership in various sectors.
We believe that gender equality is key to breaking the cycle of violence, and by fostering safe, supportive environments where women can grow and excel, we contribute to the larger global fight to end gender-based violence. WENOSA’s programs, initiatives, and advocacy efforts work hand in hand with the goals of the 16 Days of Activism, as we continuously strive to create a world where women are free from violence and empowered to lead in all aspects of life.
As part of our collective responsibility to combat gender-based violence, it’s important to support organizations that provide crucial services to survivors of violence. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, or if you’d like to volunteer or contribute to these causes, consider reaching out to the following organisations:
Tears Foundation
POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse)
Masimanyane Women’s Rights International
Rape Crisis
These organizations are dedicated to providing essential services such as counseling, legal assistance, shelter, and advocacy. They offer safe spaces for survivors and work tirelessly to raise awareness and push for policy change. Additionally, they offer opportunities for people to get involved through volunteering or donations, helping to amplify the impact of their work.
The message of “Time to Act Now” is clear: gender-based violence is a pervasive issue that requires immediate, collective action. While significant progress has been made, there is still much work to do. At WENOSA, we are committed to continuing the fight for gender equality and empowering women to thrive in safe and supportive environments.
This campaign is not just a reminder of the urgency of the issue but also a call to everyone — governments, organizations, communities, and individuals — to act now. By supporting survivors, advocating for policy changes, and committing to creating safe spaces for all, we can ensure that women’s rights are upheld and that every woman is empowered to lead, succeed, and live free from violence.
Let us all stand together in the fight against gender-based violence, and take action to create a world where women and girls can live with dignity, respect, and safety. Together, we can make a difference.
We invite you to take action in addressing the needs of South African women. If you have questions, suggestions or would like to volunteer at our organisation, you can reach us through this page, or by sending an email to info@wenosa.org. We look forward to connecting and partnering with you.
